Viewing a possible new allotment plot

Sunday morning, 11am. The sky is grey as I arrive at the gates of the allotment site, rain is promised later in the day. After a chat in the clubhouse over a warming mug of tea I’m taken out onto the allotment site to view three available plots by the site manager.

February 2022: Orchard

The first is part of the orchard. I would have to look after the trees and cut the grass. I’m told the trees were planted in the 1980s. This wasn’t what I was looking for so we move onto the next available plot.

As we walk to the next plot a plot holder pops her head out of a shed door and gives us a cheery “Good morning!”.

The next plot has a mini-orchard to its right with a greenhouse in the middle and an overgrown vegetable section on the left. We walk around the plot and I try to imagine how I would use it. We walk to the third option.

This plot has been worked up until a few months ago I’m told but due to personal issues the plot holder has decided to leave. There is a little greenhouse but I couldn’t move on until the pond and the fish within it are removed. There is no timescale given as to when this will happen. The situation of the plot holder is explained to me and I agree that this can’t be rushed.

The site manager heads back to the clubhouse and I walk back to see the second plot I was shown. I spend a good 20 minutes walking around it, thinking how I could use it.

It already has a greenhouse so that’s a positive. The mini-orchard could be kept as grass for this year while I deal with the vegetable growing section which is covered in clumps of grass. In one of the corners is a hazel tree and the catkins are in full bloom. This reminds me of the tree we had in the family home.

February 2022: I take a long walk around the allotment before deciding to take on the tenancy.

I decide that this is the allotment for me so head back to the clubhouse to inform the site manager. We chat over another cup of tea and I head home smiling.

Congrats, Sean. Remember…gardens are for joy only. No sense of obligation, no guilt, and no “musts”. Enjoy every inch.
